Whose Side Are You On?
Last year I had the great fortune of being part of a fantastic art & set decoration team (along with an equally amazing production & locations team) on the recently released The Girlfriend for Amazon. It seems to be doing pretty well.
The central narrative is of two people battling for the love one one man, and the differing points of view (with scenes told from both the lead’s sides). In the office we would ask each other “Team Cherry or Team Laura?” as events unfolded with each script.
So for our wrap party, I asked our graphics team to design badges to give out to the crew, each pledging our allegiances having experienced the whole story, which I then spent the afternoon before the party manually assembling. At the party, one of the producers approached me, having heard I was handing them out. For a split second I wondered if I should have got permission, but thankfully she approved and asked if Robin had seen them. Robin Wright: our lead actor and director.
Robin has been around in the production office - the shoot was almost entirely location based, so the team was small and the floor of the building we were on was open plan. She was always friendly, and got excited whenever a new dog appeared in the office, but we had never had reason to directly interact.
The producer and I walked over to the bar where she was sitting. Over the loud music, the producer introduced us.
*awkward laughs at having the same first name*
”Robin has something to show you!”
I’m now feeling like a kid who has just a drawing from pre-school that one parent is now getting me to show to the other to show how proud they are. Awkwardness increased by the fact that due to the lighting, Robin couldn’t really make out what has just been placed in her hands.
Producer, over the din “They’re badges! Team Cheery or Team Laura!”
Robin, catching up: “Yes! That’s what its all about! The people have to CHOOSE!”
She suddenly sees someone else she recognises and waves a hello and makes to move towards them, but before she does she smiles, puts the badges back in my hand, closes it with both of hers and walks off.
I look down at my closed hand for a few seconds, then over to the producer.
She gently takes them from my hand ”I’ll make sure she gets them”.
As far as famous people interactions go, it could have been worse…
What a delightful bunch. Proud of the lot of em.
Anyway, the show is out, its fun, maybe watch it? Let me know whose side you are on.
Take Care x
