It was a pretty sleepless night, worrying how much of our budget we had just blown on one meal. The “breakfast” included in our accommodation helped take our minds off it for a while - the pastry of our choice from the bakery across the road.
In to Pompeii! This dog has not been here since Vesuvius eruption, but he was still as a statue.
The Amphitheatre, which halted performances between 79 and 1971 AD due to being buried. In the circulating area, an exhibition documented the concert film shot here by Pink Floyd (it wouldn’t be until 2016 when a concert to an audience was played here again, this time by Floyd member David Gilmour.)
Vesuvius in the distance. Resting.
We walked around the labyrinth of Pompeii for about half an hour before admitting that we needed context. We checked online and found a tour offered through an Air BNB affiliate, which would start in a few hours at the opposite entrance. We took shelter as best we could in the meantime, drinking warm coke from the cafe in the centre of the city.
The wait for a guide was worth it. Chiara met as at the gates with the other tourists hoping to learn more about the ruins. She was enthusiastic, clearly passionate about educating anyone who found themselves on her tour, showing us how to tell the difference between a house and a business, explaining some of the murals and paintings that had been uncovered, and engaging us all along the way - she complimented by X-Men t-shirt, and told us how she was planning a London trip soon for her birthday.
You could easily spend a whole week taking in all of Pompeii - at least, all that has been uncovered so far - at least a third of the city still remains buried.
Since We Last Spoke…
House of Kong, the Gorillaz Exhibition at Copper Box is a fun time, especially as someone who is more into the concept/lore than the music itself. Most of the exhibition is camera free, so if you can get along, you should.
